Fabian Schar issues confident injury update after fears over Newcastle United return date

Fabian Schar is confident he will feature for Newcastle United before the end of the season, despite Eddie Howe suggesting his campaign could be over through injury.

Schar struggled through the closing stages of last week's first-half against Sheffield United before he was withdrawn at the interval at St James' Park. The Swiss defender, who has been an ever-present figure for Howe's side this season, could not continue due to sustaining a hamstring issue as the Magpies' injury woes continued.

Howe addressed the media on Friday, telling reporters Schar would not make the visit to Burnley this weekend and may be forced to sit out until the summer. The player has since spoken to Swiss outlet Blick, offering a more upbeat update on his issue.

"In my opinion it’s not that bad and I’m fully expecting to play for Newcastle this season," he told the newspaper. "Accordingly, I have no worries at all when it comes to the European Championships."

Given the constant cycle of injuries sustained this season, it is no surprise Howe has erred on the side of caution with regards to Schar's injury. The Newcastle boss is in no hurry to rush other returning players back as he seeks to avoid further setbacks.

Miguel Almiron, Joelinton, Nick Pope and Kieran Trippier are all on the cusp of making their respective returns but won't be prematurely dropped into Howe's XI in the final four Premier League games.

On Schar, the Newcastle boss said: "Fabian will miss a period of time out with a minor hamstring problem. He won't play tomorrow and I doubt we will see him again until next season.

"We are lighter than we'd like to be in the centre-back area. Emil has played well in that position and did very well in the Carabao Cup tie at Man United. Alex [Murphy] has been impressive in training I have been impressed with him, he has grown and developed.

"He had a little cameo last week with Fabian's injury it maybe gives him an opportunity to come into the team and the same goes for Paul Dummett."
