A thug pepper-sprayed police officers and Nuneaton hospital staff as he tried to flee. Ryan Knights had managed to get hold of the PAVA spray as he struggled with police officers in the grounds of the George Eliot Hospital.

While under arrest on suspicion of an unrelated matter Knights was taken to the 'Eliot to be checked for an injury. But he made-off from two police officers and tried to climb over a gate.

The officers caught up with him but he tried to get away again and during the altercation the 27-year-old got hold of the officer’s PAVA spray and used it on them. Two hospital staff members saw the commotion and moved to help – during which Knights sprayed one of them with PAVA spray too.

Knights was also ordered to pay a victim’s surcharge of £187.
