‘The Faceless Lady’ Trailer: Eli Roth Produces First Ever Live-Action VR TV Series

Eli Roth is continuing to push the horror genre into new terrain, except this time, it’s through virtual reality.

The “Thanksgiving” director produces Meta, Crypt TV, and ShinAwiL series “The Faceless Lady” which will debut exclusively on Meta Horizon Worlds. Billed as the first known live-action VR series, the six-episode “The Faceless Lady” will premiere in stereoscopic (3D) and have weekly installments that transport viewers (players?) into a new world.

The series is set in Ireland and has a storyline inspired by real 17th century Irish folklore, particularly the myths surrounding Lady Margaret Hodnett who haunts Cork’s Belvelly Castle. Lady Margaret Hodnett is fabled to watch the castle’s visitors through mirrors and reflective surfaces. “The Faceless Lady” turns the myth on its head, quite literally, with three couples trying to survive playing Lady Margaret’s games during a weekend stay at the castle.

Tara Lee, Staz Nair, Daisy Jelley, Mei Henri, Ugo Onwughalu, Sophie Rebecca-Jones, and Ned Dennehy star. The show is written by Jerome Velinsky and directed by John William Ross, with Roth producing.

“The Faceless Lady” attendees can RSVP for the event in Meta Horizon Worlds, with the series available in the Creepy Cabin world. The series will also be available to be watched on demand in VR on Meta Quest TV. Fans without a Meta Quest VR headset can watch the first two episodes on Crypt TV’s Facebook page when they premiere in VR.

“Partnering with Meta on VR originals has been an incredible experience, and I can’t wait for fans to enjoy VR horror in series form with ‘The Faceless Lady,'” Roth said in a press statement to IndieWire. “Seeing the reaction to ‘Trick-VR-Treat’ and ‘Be Mine’ showed what an appetite genre fans have for this medium and how VR users are experiencing horror through the headset. A VR horror episodic series will scare viewers in a way this medium has never seen before.”

Roth previously produced VR specials “Haunted House: Trick-VR-Treat” and “Be Mine” for Meta in 2022 with Crypt TV.

However, “The Faceless Lady” is larger in scale and marks the first episodic VR venture. The series is executive produced by Jack Davis and Brandl for Crypt TV, with Roth and Larry Bass and Aaron Farrel of ShinAwiL also executive producing. VR production services were rendered by Light Sail VR and co-executive producers Robert Watts and Matt Celia.

Roth is also behind the upcoming video game adaptation “Borderlands” starring Oscar winners Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis.

“The Faceless Lady” premieres on Meta Quest VR and Meta Horizon World April 4. Check out the trailer below.
