Falcon and Winter Soldier Deleted Scene: Sam and Rhodey (‘Rhodey’?) Clear the Air About Civil War Paralysis

Though not directly responsible for his fellow Avenger’s paralysis below the waist, Sam Wilson aims to clear the air with James “Rhodey” Rhodes in a deleted scene from the Disney+/Marvel series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Rhodey as War Machine (played by Don Cheadle) famously got shot down out of the sky during the epic tarmac fight of Captain America: Civil War, when Sam as Falcon (Anthony Mackie) barely dodged an energy blast from Vision’s Mind Stone.

Rhodey instead was grazed by the pulse, and dead sticked to the ground below. And though his War Machine supersuit saved him from death, the impact caused a spine injury that paralyzed his legs.

Bleeding-edge leg braces courtesy of Tony Stark restored his friend Rhodey’s ability to walk — or even do an impromptu jig, as seen in the deleted scene above, from Falcon and Winter Soldier’s Blu-ray and 4K UHD releases (released Tuesday).

Of course… for those who made it through last summer’s Secret Invasion TV series know… SPOILERS AHEAD… Rhodey at some point since his Civil War injury was replaced with a shapeshifting Skrull. SO it might not be the real deal to whom Sam is about to apologize to in the clip above.

There are a variety of theories about when exactly Skrull Rhodey was swapped in — as long ago as the end of Civil War (since the real Rhodey resurfaced in Secret Invasion paralyzed and in a hospital gown) to as recently as just prior to Secret Invasion.

Cheadle earned an Emmy nomination for the 95 seconds of his performance that actually made it into Falcon and Winter Solider Episode 1, and marveled at the feat himself (saying, “I don’t get it either”). Lovecraft Country‘s Courtney B. Vance wound up winning Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama honors.

Watch the deleted scene above, in which Rhodey reacts to Sam’s belated “olive branch.”

In addition to including this and one other deleted scene (found below), the Falcon and Winter Soldier Blu-ray and 4K UHD sets feature a “Cap’s Shield” featurette in which Mackie and the creative team discuss the iconic accessory (and the challenges of capturing the cumbersome prop in action once cameras started rolling), “Assembled: The Making of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,” and a gag reel.
