The new family-run patisserie in Hull which makes the 'best brownies ever'

A new family-run patisserie has opened in east Hull and it's already making a name for itself with chocolate brownies described as the "best ever".

Buckinghams opened in the old Pennylane barbershop in Buckingham Street, off Holderness Road, on Monday, May 6. Offering sweet and savoury treats and hot drinks for takeaway, the patisserie is run by Millie Jackson, her partner Sonny Howdle, and her mum Ellie Jackson.

"Obviously, at this end of town there isn't much around other than Cooplands," said Millie. "We are from east Hull and we like the fancier things in life but they are often the other side of town and it can be a long journey just to pick up a sweet treat."

Spotting a gap in the market for quality baked pastries, cakes and other treats in east Hull, they decided to take the plunge and open up a patisserie of their own. The feedback so far has been positive and they were rushed off their feet on their first day of opening.

Millie said: "It was fantastic. People were out and about rather than working because of the Bank Holiday. It was near enough a sellout and we had to rush to replace everything. A lot of the cakes are all made on-site."

She added: "We've had a lot of returning customers who will pop out and come back when they see we've got something new out. I would say it's been amazing.

"The feedback we've had has been amazing. People are very lovely because we are a family-run business. We had a lady who asked if we do fruit pie and we did it for her on request - we are always happy to try new things."

Millie said her personal favourites are the "old-school traybakes", such as coconut cake but is also partial to a cheesecake. Meanwhile, customers have been raving about the chocolate brownies in Facebook reviews for the business.

One person said: "I went in today, very friendly and a lovely little shop. I bought a brownie, cheesecake and a fruit tart. Was all lovely, definitely one of the best brownies I’ve had. Will 100% be back

Also complimenting the brownies, someone else commented: "Went in today, not once but twice. The first time my husband got a sausage roll and a jammy dodger blondie.

"My daughter got a brownie and I got a Swiss roll type cake. (We all shared a bit of everything). The sausage roll was lovely and flakey and the brownie was the nicest we’ve ever had."
