Netflix has confirmed a new true crime series about the murder of Rachel Nickell in 1992.

The Witness was announced by the streamer yesterday (March 14), and will look at the aftermath of her death from the perspective of her son Alex Hanscombe and his father André.

Nickell was fatally stabbed on Wimbledon Common in July 1992, with the only witness being her then-two-year-old son.

The Netflix drama "takes us on their journey from 1992 through to the early 2000s as they deal with the devastating impact of Rachel’s brutal murder on their lives".

"His father André – becoming a single parent overnight – put his own grief to one side and made Alex the centre of his world," the synopsis adds (via What's On Netflix).

"Navigating the unscrupulous media furore and the urgency of an increasingly desperate police investigation, his sole concern became the welfare of his tiny, traumatised son. Who also happened to be the only eyewitness to the attack.

"This is the story of how a father and son made it through the aftermath of an unimaginable tragedy, through darkness and into light.”

The Witness, which is set to begin filming this summer, has been created by The Victim's Rob Williams, with Alex and André Hanscombe acting as consultants on the series.

"We are much indebted to the whole team," the Hanscombes said. "Our journey has all been by the grace of God and a promise to go on together.

"We hope that audiences will be left with a testament to the tough battle of life we all face and to the power of faith, hope, love – and never giving up.”

Nickell's murder was previously explored in four-part Channel 4 series Deceit in 2021, which focuses on the police operation into the case.

The Witness will stream on Netflix.
