Fans clash on pitch after Southampton beat West Brom in Championship play-off semi-final

There were clashes between Southampton and West Brom fans during a pitch invasion at the end of the Championship play-off semi-final second leg at St Mary's.

Midfielder Will Smallbone set the stage for a Wembley face-off with Leeds on May 26 by scoring the opening goal just four minutes into the second half.

Top scorer Adam Armstrong sealed the deal with an excellent finish and a late penalty, taking his season's goal tally to 23.

West Brom struggled on the south coast but managed a last-minute consolation goal through Cedric Kipre. This was followed by ecstatic Saints fans storming the pitch in celebration of their team's progress towards an immediate return to the top-flight.

Southampton supporters flooded the field in celebration after their team secured a 3-1 victory, progressing to a Wembley final against Leeds.

However, trouble ensued when some fans made their way towards the section housing the away supporters, leading to scuffles and apparent punches being thrown. Despite calls for fans to stay off the pitch post-match, thousands ignored the plea.

Those who remained on the terraces jeered at those who defied the instruction. Scoreboards inside the stadium displayed messages urging fans to return to the stands so the players could celebrate.

Southampton manager Russell Martin commented on the incident, saying: "I haven't seen it but I think it's unnecessary and I'm pretty sure it will be a real, real minority.

"Our fans were amazing tonight. For those who did do that, if it tarnishes the night we've had and the win we've had and getting to Wembley in any way then they've let themselves down."
