What is ‘Fanum tax’? TikTok song of Gen Alpha slang has Gen Z feeling like the new ‘cringe’ generation

_________

TL;DR: Is the 'Fanum tax' song Gen Alpha's first viral internet trend?

• The “Fanum tax” song or “Sticking Out Your Gyat for the Rizzler” is a mash-up of Gen Alpha’s favorite slang terms sung to a very catchy tune.

• As the eldest members of Gen Alpha become old enough to be online, their inside jokes and memes are baffling older generations — including Gen Z

• Gen Z TikTok users have responded to the song with bewilderment since they feel like they have always been at the forefront of trends and slang.

A viral parody song that’s making the rounds on TikTok is making Gen Z feel like the new “cringe” generation for not understanding it.

The oldest members of Generation Alpha, made up of kids born in the early 2010s, are now in their early tween and teen years, so they’re joining social media and making their own memes and inside jokes. One song circulating on TikTok seems to have all of these jokes packed into a few lyrics.

The song “Sticking Out Your Gyat for the Rizzler,” sometimes known as the “‘Fanum tax’ song,” is originally sourced to a TikTok from Oct. 2 showing a Fortnite character “singing” the lyrics. It’s been added to countless TikToks since, including a popular one by a user named @papaboy020, which features a Roblox character dancing to the lyrics.

Sticking out your gyat for the Rizzler./ You’re so Skibidi, you’re so Fanum Tax./ I just want to be your Sigma./ Freaking come here./ Give me your Ohio.

The song itself is a parody of “ecstacy” by SUICIDAL-IDOL, and though it consists of only five short verses, the lyrics are jam-packed with other Gen Alpha terms, like “skibidi” and “rizz.”

But it’s “Fanum tax” that really has some Gen Z users stumped.

“Fanum” refers to @JustFanum, a YouTuber and Twitch streamer who belongs to the comedy group known as AMP (@AMPEXCLUSIVE), which stands for “Any Means Possible.”

In 2022, the term “Fanum tax” became a running joke among the group when Fanum began streaming videos of himself “taxing” other AMP members while they were eating. Instead of collecting cash, the “tax” would be a small portion of their food that he’d take for himself.

Gen Z reacts to ‘Fanum tax’

For the most part, Gen Zers have seemed distraught over feeling out of the loop since “Sticking Out Your Gyat for the Rizzler” hit TikTok.

All the “Fanum tax” confusion has led to its own viral trend.

It also has Gen Zers poking fun at “having to” interact with Gen Alpha, the generation of internet users after them, but not understanding their slang.

“wanting to be the cool zillennial sister but this is literally how my gen alpha brother talks,” wrote the user @esthersdoll in one TikTok.

“i’ve seen fanum tax explained three times and i still don’t get it,” she added in her post caption.

“Gen Alpha…wtf is this,” wrote the influencer Haylee Baylee (@haleyybaylee) in one TikTok. “First the skibidi toilet and now this.”

For some, the viral tune has been an unexpected reminder that, at some point, even the younger generation eventually feels “uncool.”

But mostly, people are just looking at the viral song — and its confusing lyrics — as a sign of what our future may look like under Gen Alpha.

As for Fanum himself, he seemed to appreciate the shoutout and even sang along in a livestream.
