Far-right 'trolls' cathedral over Koran reading at Christian service

Police are investigating a wave of far right 'trolling' and abuse aimed at Glasgow's historic St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral.

The cathedral marked the Christian Epiphany feast on 6 January by inviting the local Muslim community to join its service, in an effort to build relationships between the faiths.

A reading from the Koran was given, telling the story of the birth of Christ but saying that Jesus was not the son of God.

The reading prompted a backlash from online trolls, who targeted the church after US far-right website Breitbart criticised the service.

"St Mary's Cathedral has received a number of offensive messages. These have been reported to Police Scotland," a church spokesman said.

"We are grateful to Police Scotland for their support at this time."

Police Scotland said in a statement: "We can confirm we are investigating reports of offensive comments made towards St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral in Glasgow and inquiries are ongoing.

"Police Scotland will not tolerate any form of hate and encourages all communities to work together to ensure no one feels threatened or marginalised."
