Charity fundraising legend Les 'Gunner' Curtis and his brothers recently bade a poignant farewell to their loyal Border Collie companion Rusty, after an extraordinary 15-year fundraising journey. Gunner and Rusty are well known for their daily walks around the village and Gunner for his affability and willingness to help others.

Rusty’s friendly demeanour was infectious. He greeted passers-by from all corners of the globe, leaving them with a smile. Whether in bustling Bideford or quiet lanes of Appledore, Rusty was a reminder of kindness and community.

The former Appledore Shipyard precision welder of 38 years, Gunner stated, "Rusty was a fantastic companion and we will all really miss him. Thanks too to everyone who has offered their condolences. I would also like to extend my deepest thanks to all those incredibly generous folk who have contributed to the invaluable cause of supporting Children's Hospice South West through our endeavours. Your support has made a profound difference to the lives of countless children and families facing unimaginable challenges."

Les and family dedicated their efforts to philanthropy after retiring from their various roles at Appledore's shipyards. Their commitment to fundraising is a cornerstone of the village’s charitable efforts. Over the years the family have converted their huge back garden to produce fruit and veg they sell to raise money for Little Bridge House. In 2020 Gunner's pickled onions raised £500 for his Christmas CHSW appeal and raised £3,500 in total. They also came up with iconic Rusty T-shirts, pot towels and coffee mugs which have found homes from Appledore to Australia, the USA, far east, raising substantial funds for CHSW.

“Gunner and Rusty exemplify the best of our village spirit,” says a local donor. “Their story reminds us that even small acts of kindness can create ripples of love and hope. Qualities that are much needed in the world of today.”
