Farewell Walks set for reorganization within District

May 17—Are you ready for the final walk through a few of your favorite campuses in Huntsville ISD?

The District is inviting the community to come take a walk down memory lane as this school year draws to a close.

The opportunity for the public to walk through and say "goodbye" to the current Gibbs PreK Center (formerly Gibbs Elementary), Scott E. Johnson Elementary and Huntsville Intermediate School with a "Farewell Walk" from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 21.

These three campuses as they are known today, will either be closed or repurposed after the 2023-2024 school year, according to HISD Director of Communications Shannon Hollis.

"We know there are many who have a lot of great memories and emotional ties to them, so before we move forward with construction, grade realignment, and changing their identities, we invite you — all former students, staff, and community members to come take a self-guided tour of these school buildings," Hollis said.

"Come share your memories and walk the halls one last time as we all say a final 'farewell.'"

Looking to the future, the Gibbs PreK Center and Huntsville Intermediate School will both close.

"There are no plans for the Gibbs building currently," Hollis said.

Scott E. Johnson Elementary will open for the 2024-2025 school year at the former Huntsville Intermediate School site while the former Scott E. Johnson Elementary site will become the HISD Support & Learning Center.
