Fargo Video: The Cast Explains How They Developed the Perfect Fargo Accent

It just wouldn’t be a season of Fargo without a fresh set of Minnesota accents, would it? (Oh yah, you betcha.) FX’s Emmy-winning anthology returns for Season 5 this Tuesday at 10/9c, and TVLine got a chance to talk with the cast about how they developed the distinctive Fargo accent.

In the video above, UK native Juno Temple (who plays housewife Dot) gives credit to the show’s dialect coach Liz Himelstein, calling her “an absolute ninja” and pointing out that Himelstein worked on the original Fargo movie as well as previous seasons of the FX show. Temple adds that the way showrunner Noah Hawley writes his dialogue in the scripts helps with the accent as well: “He writes it for a Minnesota accent. The dialogue itself works for the accent.”

Jon Hamm, who plays sheriff Roy Tillman in Season 5, grew up in St. Louis, which he says carries with it “a somewhat diluted version of the Upper Midwestern accent.” But Roy is a North Dakota sheriff, and his accent is “a little more cowboy than it is Minnesota city slicker,” Hamm says. Plus, Lamorne Morris (who plays Witt Farr) compares his native Chicago accent to the standard Fargo accent, and Dave Foley (who plays Danish Graves) reveals that he went back to the original Fargo movie for research and explains how his character’s accent is “dialed fairly down” since he’s a corporate lawyer.
