Farmers Feeding the Flock field planted

May 6—DECATUR COUNTY — The Greensburg Community Bread of Life fundraiser Farmer's Feeding the Flock field was planted the afternoon of April 27.

This year's field is a 20-acre cornfield provided by Brewsaugh Family Farms located at Sandusky. The field is in "Memory of Bob Brewsaugh," who gave so much to the community before passing away from cancer.

Scott Brewsaugh did both the tillage and planting of the field. Merrill Smith, representing the Bread of Life for this fundraiser, was able to ride along. There were 34,500 corn seeds planted per acre at a depth of two inches.

The planter was a 16-row planter that made 30-inch rows. The planter also carried tanks of 28% nitrogen putting on 12 gallon per acre. In addition, five gallon per acre of Rayo was put on to help seed germination and health of the plants in colder soil conditions. Also, insecticide was applied.

An amazing feature on the tractor and planter is that it is auto-steer going down the field driven by GPS. Brewsaugh did not steer the tractor except to turn around at the end of the field. Unbelievable technology!

The seed was provided by Stewart Seeds and 16 bags would plant about 32 acres. The seed used has a maturity rating of around 115 days with the cooperation of good weather conditions. Kova Fertilizer provided the nitrogen and other chemicals. Several local agri businesses will be helping with this fundraiser as we go through the summer, including Premier Ag.

This is the seventh year for the Farmers Feeding the Flock fundraiser. In addition to raising money for helping people in need, the project helps educate the community about the cost and risk of crop farming and promotes agriculture.

Businesses, organizations, and individuals interested in sponsoring an acre for $360 can mail a check to The Bread of Life, P.O. Box 42, 720 Randall St., Greensburg, IN 47240.
