Fat Joe admits to lying in 'almost 95 percent' of songs, is not actually “all” the way up

Joey Crack's comments come as fellow emcee Young Thug's lyrics have been entered as evidence against him in trial.

Fat Joe — a.k.a. Joey Crack, a.k.a. Joey Crack The Don, a.k.a. Don Cartagena, a.k.a. Cook Coke Crack — built a career and image on his dextrous flow and brutally tough lyrics. But hip-hop, as we're reminded on this, its 50th anniversary, is an art form and Joey Crack was lying his crack off.

The 53-year-old rapper sat down with Gayle King and Charles Barkley on the premiere episode of their far-too-cheekily named show, King Charles, to discuss the case against Young Thug, in which his lyrics are being used as evidence against him.

“I’ve been rapping professionally for 30 years — I’ve lied in almost 95 percent of my songs," Fat Joe, né Joe Cartagena, said. "I’m being honest. I write like I feel that day. I’m just being creative. You couldn’t build a jail high enough for the lyrics I’ve said on songs which are all untrue."

He has a point. Take for instance one of Cook Coke Crack's verses from the classic "Twinz," a mic-torching duet with the late, great Big Pun:

"We lock towns like rounds in the chamber / Boogie Down major like Nine, I bust mine every time / Plus, I'm the crime boss of New York /Where we taught to walk the walk, all my n----s carry chalk / And stalk our prey like a predator / Whoever want it — go and get it, set it, baby, and I'ma bury ya."

As "the crime boss of New York" alone he would be facing multiple charges, or at the very least, a position in the mayor's office. Then there's the origin of Fat Joe's nickname — well, one of his nicknames — as he recently explained in a tweet.

"They call me Joey Crack 'cause the crack of my ass show whenever I stand up. Girls in my hood gave me the name," he wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "It was never because the drug crack[.] God is great."

No, Fat Joe emphasizes the delineation between Fat "I Am Crack" Joe and Joe "Family Man" Cartagena.

“What I am is, I’m a family man, someone who gives back to his community all the time," he said on King Charles. "I opened businesses in my community, so the music would never amount to the actual person Joseph Cartegena."

Someone actually facing multiple charges, Young Thug has been in prison since May 2022, accused of racketeering and gang conspiracy. On Nov. 9, an Atlanta judge ruled, in a controversial decision, that the 32-year-old rapper's lyrics could be used as evidence in his trial.

"What’s even more horrible is the District Attorneys, they know those lyrics ain’t real," Fat Joe argued. "They know that’s creativity, but if it helps their case, they’ll use it to put these guys in jail."
