Pressure will crank up with every passing minute at Elland Road on Thursday and David Wagner is banking on that panic for a Norwich City advantage. With the semi-final level at 0-0, Leeds United are firm favourites, with home advantage, to progress from here.

Wagner took Huddersfield Town to the Premier League in 2017 after his side failed to score across three play-off matches, but won two penalty shootouts for promotion. The German knows full well what role penalties could play in Leeds and seemed to suggest he will look to frustrate the hosts and hang in for as long as possible to turn the tide in the terraces.

“I've experienced the playoffs, [I’m] quite successful and I know penalties can play a part,” he said. “The truth is, and everybody knows this, I don't speak about a secret, every second, every minute we play at Elland Road and we are in the game, it's a minute in our favour because, with this underdog role away from home, this is the truth.

“I've experienced, as well in the play-offs, what this can make with a team which plays away from home and obviously with the home team as well. This is not a secret. This is a truth and it's up to us to make this count.”

With no change on the field beyond 90 fewer minutes to decide a winner, the second-leg hosts generally become the favourites in these ties. Wagner does not necessarily feel Leeds automatically have the advantage now.

The Norwich boss concedes he would have liked to win on Sunday, but feels he has the group to upset the odds on Thursday.

“I experienced it does not automatically have to be an advantage to play the second leg at home, where expectation is great, big pressure as well,” he said. “We have our idea, we know what to do to be again super-competitive and, hopefully, we will execute very well on Thursday.

“I'm absolutely fine with what I've seen. Yes, I would love to win the game, but I've seen enough that I can go, especially with this group of players, with belief and confidence in the second leg. This is exactly what we wanted to have and this is what we got.”
