Fear the Walking Dead spoilers follow.

Fear the Walking Dead producers Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg have explained the return of a character who was previously thought deceased.

In the seventh episode of the eighth season, Troy Otto (Daniel Sharman) was revealed to be alive, with Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) left stunned as she thought she had previously killed him back in the third season.

To make matters worse, Troy remarked that he had murdered Madison’s daughter Alicia, and the showrunners have revealed all about Troy’s surprise return as well as his deadly plan.

“It was something that Ian and I threw out half-seriously when we were trying to think of ways that we could have an antagonist who would really put the question front and centre to [the characters].” Chambliss told Entertainment Weekly. “The more we talked about it, the more excited we got about that person being Troy Otto.”

“We were just huge fans of his [Sharman] and the character,” added Goldberg. “Everybody was excited to revisit this chapter of the show and to expand the Madison–Troy story, especially Kim and Daniel - they loved the dynamic and the dance that those characters did together in the past.”

With five episodes of the show left, Chambliss and Goldberg also teased what could be in store for Madison and Troy, with the former saying: “Madison thought she was fighting for her own redemption to try to make up for all the things she did at PADRE.

“But Troy puts a finer point on it and gets at the real issue that Madison's going to be struggling with as we go forward - she really doesn't have much left... Madison is going to have to do some real soul searching and grieving to find out what's motivating her.”

Fear the Walking Dead airs on AMC in the US and AMC on BT TV in the UK.
