'I feel very honoured' - Jack Grimmer named as Wycombe Wanderers' new captain

Wycombe Wanderers right-back Jack Grimmer said he feels ‘very honoured’ after being named as the side's new captain.

The 30-year-old Scotsman, who is now in his sixth season with the club, was named the Chairboys’ skipper on July 4.

He takes over from the departing Joe Jacobson, who had the armband for just over two seasons between February 2022 and April 2024.

The exiting full-back only played 11 times last season, with just six of those appearances coming in the league.

This meant Grimmer, along with Josh Scowen, Richard Keogh and Luke Leahy shared the armband for much of the 2023/24 campaign.

Grimmer told the club’s media outlets: “I’m buzzing.

“Taking over from a close friend in JJ [Joe Jacobson] from last season, I feel very honoured.

“To be captain of any club is a great achievement, but to do it here where I’ve had such great leaders such as the gaffer [Matt Bloomfield], who was my first captain, Bayo [Adebayo Akinfenwa], JJ...these are big shoes to fill, but it’s an exciting period.

“I’ve played with numerous captains and players who are leaders and they are all very different.

“When I first joined, we had Adam El-Abd and he was your stereotypical captain as he was such a big presence, but everyone leads in their own way.

“I think I’ve been very fortunate as we have a squad of players that any one of them could be in a leadership group, and anyone could be captain.

“That could make my job slightly easier as we have those kinds of personalities in our squad, and I’m sure they’ll help me as I’ll help them.

“I did a lot of stuff with JJ last season and he was very good in keeping me in the loop with certain things, so I feel equipped moving into it.”

Chief Football Officer Dan Rice added: "Jack is clearly a hugely respected member of the club and will head up a leadership group within the squad, helping to drive us forward on and off the pitch and support the growth of our future club values and culture."

Manager Matt Bloomfield, who was also a captain of Wycombe, said: “Jack has demonstrated leadership qualities throughout his time here and was the stand-out candidate to take the armband going forward.

“I know he will be a huge success in the role."

Since arriving from Coventry City in the summer of 2019, Grimmer has played 174 times for the Chairboys, scoring four times.
