Final Fantasy XIV fans can rejoice, as the critically acclaimed MMORPG has finally confirmed that female Hrothgar will soon be playable.

The fifth expansion Dawntrail will release in the summer, and alongside the meaty new storyline and various additions will be the ability to play as female members of the lion-esque race that debuted all the way back in 2019's Shadowbringers.

Square Enix has released some footage of the female Hrothgar in action... well, running around, jumping, doing some stretches and surveying the area. Still, we get to see that they are quite tall and muscular, even if they are more lithe than their male counterparts.

There was another video showcasing some gameplay of the newly-revealed Pictomancer job class. Taking the unique powers of FFVI character Relm Arrowny to a new level, the magical ranged DPS class uses special paintbrushes to create colourful effects and attacks. It can also summon a Moogle to fire a laser beam from its pom-pom, which is great.

A glossy full-length CGI story trailer features a female Hrothgar character joining the Warrior of Light, Alphinaud and the Scions gang as they head across the sea for new adventures in a brand new location.

Also in the trailer, Krile is revealed to be a Pictomancer in the story, Estinien fights against a Godzilla-esque monster, while the Warrior showcases the previously-announced Viper job class.

A further video showcasing some of the new areas was also posted online, while Beastmaster was announced as a second limited job alongside Blue Mage, although it doesn't look like it's arriving with the launch of Dawntrail.

Final Fantasy XIV is out now on PlayStation 5, PS4 and PC. An Xbox Series X|S is coming this year, with an open beta test in February. Dawntrail will launch in the summer.
