Finally, my birthday band has come together

I scan the birthdays column daily, and try to create a band from those listed. I have never managed to put together a satisfactory outfit due mostly to the lack of bassists – until 15 December, with Cindy Birdsong on vocals, Serge Pizzorno on guitar, Paul Simonon on bass, Dave Clark on drums, and even William Orbit to produce and maybe add some keys.

• It’s lovely to be served a “truly traditional” Christmas lunch if you can afford it (Fancy £600 Christmas lunch at the Ritz? Sorry, sold out months ago, 17 December), but spare a thought for staff required to work so that the wealthy can indulge, but who aren’t likely to see very much of the profits or the service charge (or their families) that day. Does no one get a day off any more?

• It is not just O Little Town of Bethlehem that resonates this year (Letters, 18 December). At a service on Sunday I was struck by the story of the holy family’s flight into Egypt to avoid the mass slaughter of innocent children by Herod. I have heard that lesson numerous times in 60 years, but for the first time I found myself close to tears.
