A fire ban in Newfoundland and Labrador has doused plans for fireworks for Canada Day weekend across the province.

Press releases issued Thursday by the St. John's regional fire department — which covers St. John's, Mount Pearl and Paradise — along with the City of Corner Brook and Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay noted that the provincewide fire ban means fireworks are also forbidden.

With crews fighting two large fires in Labrador, the provincial government enacted a provincewide fire ban last week to reduce the risk of more fires being started and straining resources.

The ban prohibits the use of any kind of fireworks, along with backyard fire pits, chimineas, charcoal barbecues and open fires. The use of propane fire pits and barbecues is still permitted, but the fire department urges people to have a hose or fire extinguisher nearby at all times.
