Fire breaks out on Glasgow's Buchanan Street as smoke is seen across city centre

Firefighters are battling a blaze on Glasgow's Buchanan Street this morning with plumes of smoke seen across the city centre.

Emergency services descended on clothes shop Zara where the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service say there is a fire within a seven-storey building.

A total of seven appliances are at the scene after the alert at 9.40am on Thursday morning. It is currently unknown if the fire is within a retail unit, but the fire is currently situated on the second floor of the building.

A helicopter was also seen hovering above the city. One onlooker told out sister paper, the Scottish Daily Express, that firefighters were heading up a small lane before the store.

Crowds of workers and shoppers could be seen all own Sauchiehall Street watching events unfold while the distinct smell of smoke was present throughout the centre. There are no reported casualties.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 9.40am on Thursday, 27 June to reports of a fire within a seven-storey building in Glasgow.

"Operations Control mobilised seven appliances to the city's Buchannan Street, where firefighters were met by a fire within the building's second floor. There are no reported casualties."

At 4.40pm, the SFRS confirmed that the fire had been extinguished and their teams had left the scene.
