Fire crews on Glasgow Buchanan Street as blaze breaks out behind city centre shop

Emergency services raced to Glasgow city centre this morning following a fire within a premises.

Fire crews can be seen on Buchanan Street as they tackle a blaze within a building as passersby look on in shock. It is currently unknown if the fire is within a retail unit however, flames and plumes of smoke can be seen coming from the rear end of building number 10-16.

Scottish Fire and Rescue mobilised seven appliances to the scene with crews working to extinguish the blaze. There are currently no reported casualties.

An eye-witness told Glasgow Live: "I was walking along Buchanan Street and spotted a crowd gathering, when I got there you could see smoke pouring from behind one of the shops, then there were a lot of flames. I hope no one was hurt.

"It was pretty crazy, loads of people were standing about taking pictures before the fire brigade turned up."

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were alerted at 9.40am on Thursday, 27 June to reports of a fire within a seven-storey building in Glasgow.

"Operations Control mobilised seven appliances to the city's Buchannan Street, where firefighters were met by a fire within the building's second floor.

"Crews currently remain on scene working to extinguish the fire.

"There are no reported casualties."

Police Scotland has also been approached for comment.
