Fire Destroys Shelters in Rohingya Refugee Camp

A fire in the sprawling Rohingya refugee camp at Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, destroyed around 80 shelters and several shops on Friday morning, May 24, according to local news reports.

Footage by Mohammed Salim Khan shows people with their personal belongings waiting around the camp, as well as the fire ravaging several shelters and teams working to extinguish the blaze.

The chief of mission in Bangladesh with the United Nations, Abdusattor Esoev, wrote on X that volunteers and the local fire service managed to extinguish the fire.

Police and several organizations on the scene were working to determine the cause, the Dhaka Tribune said.
