Fire-hit warehouse 'not safe enough' for investigators

Fire investigators cannot begin their probe into what triggered a huge blaze at a Staffordshire warehouse - because it is not safe enough to go inside. Road closures are expected to remain in place following the fire in Cannock.

Firefighters from Staffordshire along with the West Midlands and Shropshire services were scrambled to the scene on Cley Road at 6.15am this morning. The thick plumes of smoke billowing from the blaze could even be seen in Stoke-on-Trent.

Now Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that thankfully nobody has been reported injured.

A spokesman said: "Whilst we’re working hard to minimise the disruption on local businesses and residents in the area, we expect road closures to be in place in the area for some time.

"Luckily, the weather is playing into our favour and excess smoke is being carried high into the air and away from residents living nearby. We’re continuing to advise people who feel they are affected to close their windows and doors as a precaution whilst we continue to work at the scene. We’d like to thank people in the area for their patience and understanding following a period of disruption."

Footage captured from the scene shows the fire engulfing what appears to be the Super Smart Service building.

A fire service spokesman added: "The cause of the fire will be investigated once it’s safe to do so."
