I Was Fired By My Boss Straight After Telling Him I'd Suffered A Miscarriage

A pregnant teenager says she was sacked from her job as a barmaid after she suffered a miscarriage.

Amy Larman, 18, from Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, lost her job at The Hollybush pub just after doctors said her unborn baby’s heart had stopped beating at 15 weeks.

She was sacked by the pub’s landlord in a text saying, “You won’t be in the right frame of mind”.

Miss Larman claims she told her boss, Adam Groves, 45, that she was going for a scan, before texting him at 9pm saying she couldn’t work her shift that evening because of her tragic news.

But he texted back to say she had lost her job. He texted: “No worries hun will call it day a day Hope all goes well with everything xxx”.

She replied: “Does this mean I’ve lost my job? Omg Adam seriously upset.”

Mr Groves texted back: “I’ve been very fare [sic] from day 1 with you.

“I can’t run a business with staff that text me at 9pm at night saying that they can’t do there shift.

“Also you won’t be in the right frame of mind after your sad news. Sorry.”

Miss Larman had worked at the pub for three months.

She said: “He knew I was pregnant - that’s why he put me on part-time hours.

“He said he had to let me go because he could not have staff on the payroll who let him down.

“You don’t treat your staff like that. I think it’s awful that I have had to go through this and when I’m down I get kicked.”

Miss Larman insists she told her boss in advance that she was booked for a scan on January 15 - she was due to work a shift that evening.

She was given the devastating news about her baby at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Welwyn Garden City, before being transferred to Lister Hospital in Stevenage for the termination.

“After the scan I was told the baby’s heart had stopped beating,” said Miss Larman.

“I was so shocked. I’m still in shock.”

Mr Groves claimed Miss Larman only told him about the scan at 9pm when her shift was supposed to start and that she did not mention the miscarriage.

“She texted me at 9pm at night saying she had trouble,” he said.

“I have been very lenient with the girl. Just last week she signed a temporary contract because she failed the last one.”
