The fire service have released the suspected cause of a building blaze that saw firefighters battle for hours at a building in the centre of a seaside town. The North Wales Fire and Rescue Service were alerted shortly before 7pm yesterday evening to a fire in a building on Abergele Road in Colwyn Bay.

Police and firefighters attended the incident and the main road was closed to traffic. Six fire engines attended - including both engines from Colwyn Bay and Llandudno.

They were joined by the aerial ladder platform and an incident control unit. Fire crews used breathing apparatus, hose reels and a main line to tackle the blaze, supported by thermal imaging cameras. They entered the closed Pavilion pub building.

The crews spent more than five hours at the scene tackling the fire before the stop came in at just before midnight. There were no casualties.

A spokesperson from the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "The fire caused severe heat and smoke damage to a room on the lower ground floor, smoke damage to the shop above and light smoke damage to an empty building alongside.

"The cause of the fire is thought to be electrical."

The Pavilion in Colwyn Bay shut back in July 2022 and has been placed on the market.
