Firefighters tackle massive field fire after bonfire spreads

Multiple crews of firefighters in Oxfordshire have tackled a major fire after a bonfire spread to a hay field.

The incident occurred today (Saturday, June 29) as crews and vehicles from three of the county’s fire stations attended the Brize Norton area.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service believe that the blaze was caused after a bonfire which was held nearby spread to the field.

Photographs posted on social media by the service show the level of damage dealt to the field with crops blackened by the flames.

A spokesperson for Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue said: “Crews from Witney Fire Station and Rewley Road Fire Station supported by a 4x4 from Abingdon Fire Station have been in the Brize Norton area today tackling a field fire.

“The cause is believed to be from a nearby bonfire that spread to the field with hay.

“With the warm and dry weather we are experiencing it’s important to remember to make sure you protect the surrounding area and prevent fires from occurring.”
