Netflix has released an official first look at Benedict Cumberbatch in new series Eric.

The series, which was first announced in January 2023, is set to feature the Doctor Strange star as puppeteer Vincent Sullivan.

Sullivan is a puppet maker on America's biggest children's show, Good Day Sunshine, but his life starts to unravel when his son Edgar disappears, leading to him engaging in volatile behaviour and substance addiction.

An official first look was posted on Netflix's official X (formerly Twitter) account, featuring Gaby Hoffman and Cumberbatch's characters at what appears to be a press event, which presumably sees Sullivan appealing for information on Edgar's whereabouts.

"Set in 1980s New York, Eric is an emotional thriller from Abi Morgan following the desperate search of a father when his nine year old son disappears one morning on the way to school," the post's caption reads.

A previous look at the series featuring Cumberbatch in a giant blue suit hinted at Sullivan's descent into delusion. He becomes convinced that the key to finding Edgar lies in his son's drawings of a blue monster puppet named Eric, and thinks that if he can get Eric on TV, he could find his son.

Ivan Morris Howe stars in the series as Edgar. The Walking Dead and Fantastic Beasts actor Dan Fogler, Ozark's McKinley Belcher III and Da 5 Bloods' Clarke Peters also co-star.

Cumberbatch also recently starred in Wes Anderson's The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and alongside James McAvoy in The Book of Clarence.

He has also lined up a role in new movie Morning, about a world where sleep is no longer needed, featuring Star Wars' Naomi Ackie.

There is currently no release date for Eric.
