ITV is celebrating the 20th anniversary of groundbreaking comedy series Cold Feet with a sneak peek at what's to come.

The cast have gathered together once again as they start work on the upcoming seventh series - which will air two decades after the love story of Adam Williams (James Nesbitt) and Rachel Bradley (Helen Baxendale) captivated millions.

Reflecting on Cold Feet's past, present and future on the 20th anniversary (March 30), creator Mike Bullen said: "Twenty years ago, when Cold Feet began, I was just trying to write a show that would amuse and hopefully move my own generation. That remains the aim. It's just that, with the passage of time, we're a generation older.

"We don't face the same issues, but there are still issues to be faced. I think that's why the reboot worked. We weren't a tribute act to ourselves; we've still got something to say. I've met quite a few viewers who knew of the show because their parents watched the original, and are now fans in their own right. I get a huge buzz out of that."

Fans will probably notice that missing from the new cast photo is Helen Baxendale, and that's because she actually turned down an opportunity to reprise her role as Rachel.

Her reticence makes sense considering that Rachel was tragically killed off in the original series just after she and Adam had their now-grown son Matt (Ceallach Spellman).

"I wanted to find a way of doing Cold Feet with the original six," writer Mike Bullen admitted last year.

"So even the third version of the first script for this series still had Helen as Rachel in it, in the way we did in the last episode of the last series. That she appeared in Adam's mind.

"I sent that script to Helen to say, 'Do you want to do it?' She was very sweet about the script but she said, no, it wasn't for her.

"And I'm pleased she did because it was the right decision both for her and the show. I was clinging to something that we needed to let go of.

"But Rachel was such a key part of the show and to all those characters. So it is inevitable that she is in their thoughts at times. I'm sure Adam thinks of her every day."

The new series of Cold Feet is being filmed in Manchester and will air later in 2017 on ITV.
