‘A Fistful of Dollars’ to Be Remade by ‘The Departed’ and ‘Ripley’ Producers

Fresh off IndieWire’s list of the 100 greatest Westerns, Sergio Leone’s classic Spaghetti Western “A Fistful of Dollars” is getting a remake.

The original 1964 feature, which starred Clint Eastwood as a nameless gunfighter, began a film trilogy that included “For a Few Dollars More” and “The Good the Bad and the Ugly.” Now, “A Fistful of Dollars” is going to be reimagined by the producers behind “The Departed,” “300,” and “The Talented Mr. Ripley.”

Euro Gang Entertainment, founded by Gianni Nunnari and Simon Horsman, will produce the “A Fistful of Dollars” remake, along with Italian producer Enzo Sisti of FPC and Rome-based Jolly Film, which produced the original movie. The film is expected to be an English-language remake, but no details have been made public yet.

Euro Gang and Sisti recently collaborated on Roland Emmerich’s upcoming Peacock gladiator series “Those About to Die” starring Anthony Hopkins.

“I am delighted to partner with Gianni again having just worked with him on ‘Those About to Die,’ and with Simon on the remake of this classic film, which created a whole new sub-genre in film spawning over 500 European westerns,” producer Sisti said in a press statement to Deadline.

Euro Gang Entertainment co-founders Nunnari and Horsman added, “Enzo is one of the most experienced producers in the film business, and we are fortunate to call him our partner on this incredible project. We are determined to produce a remake that does justice to the great Sergio Leone’s classic.”

Nunnari previously executive produced “The Departed,” “Se7en,” and the “300” franchise, which is also landing a TV series. Producing partner Horsman was a producer on “Rob Peace,” Hulu’s “Legacy: The True Story Of The LA Lakers,” and shelved Jonathan Majors film “Magazine Dreams.”

Sisti has produced “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” “The English Patient,” “The Passion of the Christ,” and “The Life Aquatic,” as well as Netflix series “Ripley” and “Equalizer III.”

Guendalina Ponti of Rome-based Ponti, De Sanctis & Partners, advised both Euro Gang Entertainment and FPC on the “Fistful of Dollars” deal.

“A Fistful of Dollars” celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014 with a special screening at Cannes, hosted by Quentin Tarantino. The film was restored in 4K with cinematographer Ennio Guarneri overseeing the restoration.
