Five apartments have been approved at a former children's care home in Grimsby.

North East Lincolnshire Council 's planning committee unanimously approved plans to change the use of Weelsby View in Weelsby Road to five apartments. The home was run by the Linkage Community Trust, and supported individuals primarily with learning difficulties. However, it is currently vacant.

Parking, noise nuisance and privacy undermined by overlooking were raised by neighbour objections. Council officers recommended it for approval, though.

It was felt the distance in terms of overlooking was "not unreasonable in an urban area" a planning officer told councillors. The noise nuisance and highways concerns were also not shared, with council highways deeming it acceptable, subject to conditions.

The five two-bed apartments will each have a car park space at the back and there will be five cycle spaces too. Agent Matt Deakins had little to add after the council officer's summary, but did address parking concerns of residents.

He said he lived nearby and had been popping by two or three times a month. Parking problems "seem to be issues relating to people parking on double yellow lines" he said, he adding he found a space easily enough.

"We don't believe the proposal is going to exacerbate the parking issues that are already there." Cllr Henry Hudson greeted the application warmly. "Yes, I think we need to welcome investment in this lovely building," he said, and added he thought the flats looked desirable.

Heneage Ward Cllr Kevin Shutt said his concern was with the parking, though acknowledged five spaces were to be created behind. Fellow ward Cllr Matthew Patrick said he generally did not have a lot of issues parking in the area when he went there. "I'm satisfied with this application, it would see this building brought into use."
