Plymouth Urban Tree Festival

The Plymouth Urban Tree Festival is a nine-day series of events from May 11 to 19 to bring people together and celebrate Plymouth's trees. The festival is organised by the charity Plymouth Tree People and has more than 40 events with many of them free.

The itinerary includes guided tree walks, children’s events, competitions and workshops. Events are being held all over the city, some by individuals and some in collaboration with other Plymouth organisations.

An opening event takes place at Tulgey Woods on Saturday, May 11, from 3pm until 6pm, with morris dancers, tours and workshops. There is a family event on Friday, May 17 at the community space Keyham Green Places with storyteller Lisa Schneidau, a children’s tree-themed poetry competition and live music, starting at 3.30pm.

On Saturday, May 18, from 2pm, there will be Tree’s A Crowd, a fun celebration of trees and people at Snapdragons, at the Bowling Green in Victoria Park, with folk music group Wren Music, food and drink and the Art and Energy Collective. Before it kicks off people can join the Rebel Botanists for a “chalk walk” in Victoria Park which will finish at Snapdragons.

A film will be shown at the Plymouth Arts Cinema called The Happy Man Tree which is about a campaign in Hackney to save a plane tree. The filmmakers have very agreed to come to Plymouth for the showing and beforehand they are holding Interventions.

The Interventions are in three parts: People are urged to notice a tree at risk, a tree that has been lost – or simply they love. Organisers then invite people to walk from the tree, alone or with others, to reach the cinema at 6pm on Tuesday, May 14.

At 6pm, at Plymouth Arts Cinema, people can contribute to the ever-evolving Mycelium Mundus tapestry, share stories of trees, and listen to a specially-created audio work which will play as people enter the auditorium to watch the film. After the screening people are invited to join a reflection about the impact of the loss of mature trees in towns and cities across the UK.

Penny Tarrant, chair of Plymouth Tree People, said: “"We are really excited to be delivering a bigger and better Urban Tree Festival in Plymouth this year. There's something for everyone, so please check out our programme and sign up for one of the many, mostly free events. We want to share our love of trees and to tell you about all they do to keep us healthy across the city. Many thanks to the Plymouth and South Devon Community Forest for funding this year's festival.
