Talkshow stalwart Jerry Springer has died after a short battle with cancer aged 79.

The legendary TV host presented The Jerry Springer Show, famous for its outrageous real-life storylines, for 27 years from 1991 to 2018.

Family spokesman Jene Galvin said that Jerry, real name Gerald, passed away at his home in Chicago after being diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.

Mr Galvin, a friend of Mr Springer’s since 1970, said in a statement: “His ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried, whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word.”

The show was famous for bringing together warring families and friends, and would often end up with a brawl on stage while the audience chanted: “Jerry! Jerry!”

He was also famous for hosting America’s Got Talent from 2007 to 2008, and more recently fronting the show Judge Jerry.

Here we look at five of the best moments on our screens:

1. The ‘hillbilly’ who perfected kung fu by... watching TV

Characters like David are arguably the reason the show ran for so long. This was a man who called himself a hillbilly, and revelled in the name, saying he was proud of his hillbilly roots.

Not only that, but he appeared on the show to boast about more of his life, telling the world how he was a kung fu expert and had learned the art solely from studying his TV from his living room, watching action films.

2. Man Marries Horse

The name alone would make us tune in and tune in they did — in their millions. This episode was actually so successful that they did a follow-up ‘reunion’ episode to find out how the happy, erm, couple was getting on.

The classic love story captured the nation, but for all the wrong reasons. This was the romantic tale of how one man fell in love with his pet horse. The man took to the stage to profess his undying love for the four-legged animal, Pixel, and had told how he had married said horse. Imagine the buffet at the wedding party after...

3. My brother took my virginity

This one is exactly as it sounds. Talby decided the perfect place to admit to her taboo was on live TV in front of millions, and the faces of the audience spoke volumes.

Talby took not only her family on the show for the shock, but also her long-term boyfriend, who she broke up with on live TV and declared her undying romantic love for her brother.

4. Breaking the world sex record

Randy Annabel Chong was not shy on her first appearance on the show and happily opened up to a bemused Jerry about her after-hours — or all hours — sexcapades.

She revealed on the show how she had broken the world sex record by having sex with a whopping 251 men in just 10 hours. But things, if possible, turned even crazier when another woman came on soon after to burst her bubble to stake her own claim as the sex queen. Adult film actress Jasmin St Clair claimed to have had sex with 300 men in the same time frame to take the ultimate title. Yikes.

5. I cut off my own manhood

We are sure you are wincing reading this, because we were wincing writing it.

An early episode of Jerry Springer set the benchmark, and showed that the programme would always be at the forefront of anything outrageous.

Earl came on the show to tell how he had chopped off his own “male organ” using nothing more than a pair of garden shears. The audience can be seen visibly gasping as Jerry introduces his guest, who then went on to tell the story of how he took the drastic action to stop a male stalker from wanting to follow him everywhere.

The stalker appeared on the show and claimed the men had been lovers, something Earl strongly denied.

Whatever happened between the pair, we are sure there would have been less dramatic ways to solve the issues.
