Five Nights at Freddy's director Emma Tammi has defended the horror film's PG-13 rating in the US.

Based on Scott Cawthon's video game series of the same name, Five Nights at Freddy's follows a security guard who begins working the night shift at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza.

However, he soon realises that making it through the night won't be easy as he starts to unearth the dark and deadly secret at the heart of the restaurant.

While the film has received an age rating of 15 in the UK, US viewers under the age of 13 will be able to watch it as long as they're accompanied by an adult.

Tammi has now explained how it was always the plan to "stick to a PG-13 rating" in order to make the film accessible to a wider audience as she defended the choice.

"It felt like it was important and really exciting to be able to include a younger audience to come see this movie," she told GamesRadar.

"But we also, of course, wanted to deliver on the scares and at least the implied violence of a kill, even if you don't see everything."

The filmmaker continued: "I personally find it sometimes more fun and creative to figure out the way to show the thing without explicitly showing the thing or without graphically showing the thing.

"It lets your mind go to even darker places sometimes than when you show all the gore in the guts. So, I was really excited about that rating, to be honest."

Five Nights at Freddy's stars The Hunger Games' Josh Hutcherson, Scream's Matthew Lillard, You's Elizabeth Lail, and Piper Rubio.

Five Nights at Freddy's is out now in UK cinemas and arrives in US cinemas and on Peacock in the US on October 27.
