The Flash spoilers follow.
Beginning with Arrow way back in 2012, the series soon led to an extended universe made up of 710 episodes across 40 different seasons – so there was a lot of pressure on The Flash to tie all of that history up as well as the storylines of its own cast.
The finale saw the return of iconic villain Reverse-Flash (Tom Cavanagh), intent on bringing down Barry Allen/The Flash (Grant Gustin) once and for all plotting alongside Eddie Thawne (Rick Cosnett).
After a series of teary goodbyes and the tying up of loose ends, the final scene sees Barry and his wife Iris (Candice Patton) adjusting to life as parents with their daughter, Nora.
The Flash star Grant Gustin has opened up on his feelings towards the show's heart-warming happy ending, saying it was a "good testament" to what the show had always been.
"I felt good in general about the last few [episodes] and some of the story points that we were able to hit," he told Deadline.
"I loved the episode that, I believe, was one Eric [Wallace] directed, where we put a bow on the Reverse-Flash storyline and visited the night Barry’s mom was murdered again, and he got to spend all the time with his parents one last time.
"I really enjoyed that episode, and I like where we leave them all.
"I’ve been talking a lot about his family. The show was always about family, and we finish it off by Barry and Iris bringing Nora into their world and into the family and going into the future together — and we saw that glimpse into 2049 and Team Flash is still together protecting the city.
"So I think it was just a good testament and indication of what the show had always been and that there was a lot of hope on the horizon as we wrapped up the last couple episodes."
The episode began with Team Flash formulating a plan to take down the bad guys, when they got an alert that Barry had returned to the present after finding himself stuck in 2049. Soon after his return, Eddie approached Barry in the hospital as Iris was giving birth.
An epic showdown followed as Barry lured the threat away from his vulnerable wife, with Barry ultimately finding a way to separate Eddie from the blue crystal inside of him and save his life as he rejected being the avatar for the Negative Speed Force, ending Barry's conflict with them for good.
