A flight was forced to divert more than 3,000 miles to Manchester Airport this afternoon due to a "medical emergency". The aircraft, travelling from Frankfurt, Germany, to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, rerouted to Manchester on Wednesday, May 8.

The aircraft flew over the tip of Anglesey and off the North Wales coast eastwards on its way to the airport, reports the Liverpool Echo. Manchester Airport has confirmed the diversion was prompted by a medical situation on board, necessitating an urgent landing at the nearest airport.

Flight tracking service Flight Radar showed the Condor-operated flight departed Frankfurt at 11:45am and was expected to touch down in Manchester at 2:52pm. The plane's unexpected detour caused quite a stir over Merseyside, with locals taking to social media to discuss the unusual sighting.

One resident said: "It's currently circling over my house in St Helens! Presume its got a lot of fuel to burn off?". Another added: "It's holding at 6000ft and circling between Kirkby, St Helens and Wigan."

The ECHO has asked for a response from Condor regarding the incident.
