Grapes are a popular fruit that make a tasty snack and are perfect in fruit salads and smoothies but keeping them fresh and flavourful can be tricky if they're not stored correctly.

Food hygiene expert at High Speed Training, Natasha Blythe, has shared her knowledge on how to extend the shelf life of grapes with some unexpected tips. Contrary to common belief, Natasha explained that storing grapes in an airtight container may actually speed up their spoilage.

Airtight containers trap moisture and limit airflow, creating conditions that hasten the spoiling process. She said: "As with a lot of fruit or vegetables, the best way to prolong the shelf life of your grapes is to allow air circulation."

Instead, Natasha suggests keeping grapes in the ventilated container they came in or moving them to a perforated bag to encourage airflow. She warned against washing grapes before storing them in the fridge, reports the Express, as "washing grapes before refrigerating them can create excess moisture and speeds up the spoiling process".

To keep grapes fresh, simply put them in the refrigerator without rinsing. Storing grapes in one of the fridge's drawers helps control temperature and humidity, further extending their shelf life.

Natasha recommended being aware of where grapes are stored in the fridge. She said: "Avoid placing grapes near smelly foods as grapes have a tendency to absorb odours."

By keeping grapes away from pungent foods, their natural flavour and aroma can be preserved, ensuring a delightful snacking experience. For those looking to extend the lifespan of grapes even further, Natasha offers a creative solution - freezing them.

She said: "Frozen grapes are great options for creating smoothies.". Simply wash and dry the grapes before placing them in the freezer.
