Fool Me Once's Adeel Akhtar will appear opposite Sarah Lancashire in the Netflix spy series Black Doves.

The star's casting was officially announced over on social platform X/Twitter, with True Detective: Night Country's Finn Bennett, The Crown's Luther Ford and Curb Your Enthusiasm actress Tracey Ullman each playing a supporting role, too.

No further character details have been confirmed yet for the new cast members.

Black Doves has been created by Giri/Haji writer Joe Barton, and takes place in London during the festive season. Lancashire plays a spymaster named Reed in the series.

The action follows a woman named Helen Webb (Keira Knightley), a spy passing her politician husband's secrets along to the secret Black Doves organisation.

Helen's life is upended when her lover Jason is assassinated. She seeks out her friend Sam Young (Ben Whishaw) for protection, and together they set out to unravel the truth surrounding Jason's murder.

Fargo star Whishaw's character has his own stuff going on, though, with his past coming back to bite him after his last job went awry. The duo then "set off on a mission that will lead them to uncover a vast, interconnected conspiracy.

The synopsis teases that Helen and Sam's discoveries link "the murky underworld of London to a looming geopolitical crisis – and leads them to question the cost of the moral choices they've made".

Black Doves creator Barton previously said that his scripts were "fuelled by turkey sandwiches and discarded bottles of cream liquor" during Christmas 2022.

"To be now going into production with a cast and crew full of people whose work I admire so much is unbelievably exciting and I couldn't be more thrilled to get to see this show come to life," he added.

Black Doves will stream on Netflix later this year.
