Former Casualty star Lee Mead opened up about a possible return to the show.

Mead played popular nurse Ben ‘Lofty’ Chiltern on Casualty between 2014 and 2016, and later Holby City from 2017 before departing from the latter around three years ago. But does he see himself ever returning to Casualty?

In an interview with Inside Soap, the actor admitted: “I’d love to go back one day but it probably wouldn’t be for a long stint.

“Because I feel I’ve done that now. And it also depends on what direction they’d want to take Lofty, and what the storylines would be.”

However, Mead said that he enjoyed his time on the shows, adding: “But my time on both Casualty and Holby was great.”

The star also noted that appearing in the shows meant he was recognised for his work as an actor, too, saying: “And then to get nominated for a National Television Award [in 2015] as well was amazing. It really opened up my whole career.”

Mead previously spoke about returning to the show on an Instagram Live and, while he was potentially open to the idea in 2020, he did say “five years is quite a long time to play one character”.

In his personal life, Mead has recently announced his engagement to girlfriend Izzy Szumniak. On social media, the actor shared a photo of the couple looking extremely happy and he captioned it: "So this happened today, and my beautiful Issy said yes.

"We're both so happy and can't wait to spend forever together."

Mead became a household name when he took part in the 2007 talent show, Any Dream Will Do, which saw him take on the lead role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. He is currently starring in the Queen musical We Will Rock You.

Casualty airs on Saturdays on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
