A former children's worker has narrowly avoided a jail sentence despite being caught with more than 30,000 indecent images. Chaiye Garland-Luscombe received a knock at his home in Mangotsfield by police officers after concerns were raised he had accessed illegal pornography.

The 29-year-old was arrested and his devices were seized. In total, officers found 33,362 images of children as well as at least four images of extreme pornography involving animals.

Garland-Luscombe, of no fixed address, was charged and held on remand. Earlier this year at Bristol Crown Court, Garland-Luscombe pleaded guilty to:

  • Make an indecent photograph/Category B image of a child on or before November 6, 2023 in Mangotsfield, South Gloucestershire

  • Make an indecent photograph/Category A image of a child on or before November 6, 2023

  • Possess extreme pornographic image/images portraying act likely to result in serious injury to person's private parts on or before April 27, 2022

Garland-Luscombe worked within pre-schools, schools and out-of-school holiday clubs across South Gloucestershire. At Bristol Crown Court, he was sentenced to 24 months in prison, suspended for 24 months, issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 10 years and placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for 10 years.

He was also ordered to undertake 30 days of Rehabilitation Activity Requirement, 220 hours of unpaid community work and take part in work with the Horizon programme. Garland-Luscombe was also asked to pay a surcharge of £156.

Det Insp Stephen Baines, from the Internet Child Abuse Team, said: “This was a complex investigation into someone who has knowingly accessed indecent images of children and animals, and who worked with children in the past.

“Thankfully, none of the young people Garland-Luscombe worked with were victims of his crimes. However, the children who appear in the images he accessed online are real-life victims who were subjected to horrible abuse for others’ gratification.

“Our Internet Child Abuse Team (ICAT) is dedicated on cracking down on criminals who use the internet to access images of children or attempt to communicate with and groom them.

“If you are concerned that a child may be being groomed online, or you believe someone you know may be accessing indecent images of children, please contact us immediately. You can also find out more by speaking with charities including the NSPCC or Barnardos.”
