Former EastEnders star Himesh Patel opens up on "unconventional" transition to Hollywood

Former EastEnders star Himesh Patel has opened up on his "unconventional" transition to Hollywood.

Patel starred in the long running BBC soap from 2007 to 2016 as Tamwar Masood, but left to pursue other acting ventures; these have included a big break into Hollywood, with roles in Tenet, Don't Look Up and Good Grief.

According to Patel, though, his career trajectory from one to the other is almost unbelievable.

Speaking to The Independent, he admitted, "I think I still have slight imposter syndrome about the whole thing, because people aren’t meant to go on that journey."

Continuing, he explained, “That’s not meant to happen. You’re not meant to do nine years on EastEnders and then get the lead role in a Danny Boyle movie," referencing the Beatles-centric musical flick Yesterday.

"I’m glad I’m an example that it can be done. I hope I’m not the last young actor who establishes themselves on a soap."

Patel's most recent project is a role in Daniel Levy's Good Grief, a comedy about chosen family in the wake of a loss, as one of the main character's friends.

The film (available to stream now on Netflix), was awarded three stars in Digital Spy's review.

"Good Grief remains an affecting showcase of Levy's considerable talents, both in-front and behind the camera," it says. "It's no surprise he pitches Marc perfectly, given he wrote the character, but he also allows the room for the supporting cast to shine."

It adds, "Good Grief might not be perfect, but as a debut feature, it promises great things in Daniel Levy's future filmmaking career."

Good Grief is available to watch now on Netflix.
