Former Liverpool FC star Stephen Warnock sets record straight after 'explicit close call' on air

Former Liverpool FC star Stephen Warnock has set the record straight on a hilarious moment during yesterday's coverage of Euro 2024.

The BBC pundit was providing the commentary for Slovenia and Serbia's 1 -1 draw on Thursday afternoon. The 42-year-old from Ormskirk was joined by Lee Blakeman on the commentary and appeared to narrowly avoid a huge blunder on air.

The Group C encounter started slowly with the first goal coming in the 69th minute with Slovenia taking the lead through right back Zan Karnicnik. The match sprung into life after this as Luka Jovic levelled the game in the dying moments to salvage a draw for Serbia.

Warnock appeared to nearly drop an explicit comment as the game started to get going. As Slovenia won a corner, Lee said: "Just like that Stephen Warnock, it's come alive!'"

The former Aston Villa defender responded: "'It has come to life,' Warnock said. He added: 'And thank f..." Warnock stopped himself before he added: "'Thank goodness for that."

A listener shared the clip on X with the caption: "Stephen Warnock’s BBC career just flashed before his eyes." Warnock has taken to the social media platform to clarify what he was going to say.

He said: "A close call. Was only trying to say thankfully but decided to change it and then it sounded even worse."

Warnock was praised as fans took to the comments in stitches after the viral moment. Sky Sports broadcaster Gary Taphouse said: "Listened to you a couple of times in the last week, absolutely top class job, keep up the brilliant work"

Paul said: "Superb tip over the bar that one." Peter posted: "I'm pretty sure most people would have agreed with you! Should be more heart-on-sleeve swearing on commentaries."
