Former Spanish football chief to stand trial for sexual assault after World Cup kiss
Luis Rubiales will stand trial for sexual assault over allegedly kissing a World Cup player without her consent.
Footballer Jenni Hermoso should have been celebrating a historic milestone when Spain's women's team won its first ever World Cup on 20 August 2023.
Instead, Hermoso's achievement was overshadowed when the Former Spanish football chief kissed her on the lips during the trophy presentation ceremony, prompting international outrage.
Rubiales, president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation at the time, has since resigned from his position but denies any wrongdoing.
Hermoso, on the other hand, affirms the kiss was not consensual as Rubiales has claimed, instead describing it as "unexpected and at no time consensual".
Rubiales faces one count of sexual assault and one charge of coercion.
Jorge Vilda, the former coach of the women's team, Albert Luque, the team's current sporting director, and Ruben Rivera, the Spanish federation's head of marketing, will also be tried for coercion. All three are accused of trying to pressure the player into saying the kiss was consensual. All of the men deny wrongdoing.
The trial will be held in Madrid, but a date has not yet been set.
