Former Wrexham, Newcastle United, Northampton Town and Cheltenham Town defender Ben Tozer joins Forest Green Rovers

Forest Green Rovers have signed former Cheltenham Town captain Ben Tozer after his departure from Wrexham this summer.

Tozer, 34, has just helped Wrexham claim back-to-back promotions from the National League to League One.

He was the Robins' skipper for their 2020/21 League Two title-winning campaign, but left to join Wrexham early in the following campaign for a fee of £200,000.

On his move to the New Lawn, Tozer said: "Getting promoted back-to-back was incredible and it was amazing to be a part of the club during that time.

"I gained a lot of experience playing a good chunk of games for Wrexham and learned a lot while supporting the younger players from the sidelines."

He said was looking forward to working closely with Steve Cotterill, who has five promotions on his CV.

"During my off season, I wrote up a do’s and don’ts list; what I wanted from my next move, obviously I want to continue the highs but there’s more to it than just winning games," he said.

"The gaffer and his plans and aspirations, the kind of dressing room and culture he wants in the team, the other players and signings he wants to make, and he was keen to accommodate me and my family.

"Then there’s the plans off the pitch like the new training ground, it all goes hand in hand. On what he’s looking forward to next season.

"I want a successful season on the pitch, as a player and for the club. Everyone knows that promotion out of the National League is difficult, we’ve got to work hard and I’m looking forward to getting get stuck in."

Forest Green have already added defender Sean Long and Liam Sercombe to their squad this summer as they look to bounce back to the EFL at the first attempt.
