Four talented Plymouth singers to go head-to-head in last battle

The finalists of a Plymouth talent competition have been revealed ahead of the contest's last battle. The Blues Bar and Grill is playing host to the final of its first Singers’ Showdown contest on Monday, May 13, at 7.30pm.

From more than 50 applicants, four heats and two semi-finals have whittled down the contestants to the final four. “It’s been an incredible journey”, says Kay Scoble, of Koru Entertainment which is running the competition on behalf of the Blues Bar.

“The sheer amount of talent in Plymouth is amazing, and we’ve had some truly brilliant singers gracing the stage over the last few weeks.”

A number of the final 16 competitors had never sung in public before entering the contest. “To see complete unknowns competing with some more established names on the local circuit, and holding their own, has been a real pleasure,” says Kay.

“I think all of our final sixteen will go on to do well, should they continue their musical journey.”

Jess Schuttkacker is at the very start of her musical journey. Jess, 19, from Yelverton, had never sung in public before her heat, aside from karaoke.

"I am honoured to be a part of the final of the first Singers' Showdown contest," says Jess. "I've enjoyed every minute of performing at the Blues Bar, and I'm proud to have gotten this far."

Already a mainstay of the local music scene, Charley Barlow is excited for the final. "My confidence has been built up from self-belief, and being part of this competition has given me the opportunity to do so," she says.

"I feel extremely lucky to be in the final, and can only look towards the future now, carrying this confidence and encouragement forward."

Scott Cook, manager of the Blues Bar and Grill, has been astonished at the standard of singing from all contestants. “When we launched the contest, we didn’t know what to expect,” he said.

"The standard of singing has been beyond any expectations we could have had, and the support from the local community has been immense. The goodwill for all contestants every week has been off the scale, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone for the final on Monday.”

All finalists will be awarded a paid gig at the Blues Bar and Grill, but the overall winner also wins a cash prize of £100.

The finalists are as follows:

  • Jess Schuttkacker

  • Shane Brierley

  • Alysha Vine

  • Charley B
