A fox that was terrified to cross an East London road waited patiently for the green light in a viral video. In the clip posted on X, we see the urban fox waiting at the lights on the A124 London Road in Barking.

The fox's worry is clear as it watches the road, backing away from the cars. It retreats a bit more to the cover of darkness provided by a ledge when a police car with its sirens on comes zooming past.

Eventually, the lights turn red for the cars and green for the fox, which allows the animal to gently run across and onwards with its journey.

The person who posted the video, @paulpowlesland wrote on the post: "Just found an urban fox trying to cross the road in Barking but clearly scared by heavy traffic. I pressed the pedestrian crossing button for them & they then crossed over effortlessly to continue with their evening of foxy activities. Maybe we need beg buttons for wildlife too?"

The video, filmed near the bridge that goes over the River Roding, has a number of replies with one person writing: "I wish we would make some wildlife bridges in this country. It’s so upsetting how much wildlife is killed on the roads."

Another said: "Thank you for helping them! So sad to watch them shrink back from the traffic and to think how many of them don't have someone to clear traffic for them."

One person saw the funny side and said: "Imagine if someone had pulled up to the light and seen the fox cross. 'Sandra look. That bloody fox just used the crossing. How did it press the button?'”

And one person simply wrote: "I hope they got back safely!"
