Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis’ Lands Interim Agreement From SAG-AFTRA

Megalopolis, the long-awaited passion project from Francis Ford Coppola, is the latest film to land an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA. The film finished production earlier this year so it is unknown what the agreement would be used for, but with festival season ramping up it could be getting one in order to be sold in one of the markets, or potentially to screen at a festival, in which case it would need an agreement for publicity purposes.

Reps for Coppola could not be reached for comment Thursday after the film appeared on SAG-AFTRA’s daily updates of its interim agreements list. The film was granted an agreement on Wednesday, according to the guild.

Adam Driver stars in Megalopolis alongside Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Chloe Fineman, Kathryn Hunter, Dustin Hoffman, DB Sweeney, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Bailey Ives, Grace Vanderwaal, and James Remar.

Coppola, who wrote the script, shot the film in Atlanta and New York. The logline: The fate of Rome haunts a modern world unable to solve its own social problems in this epic story of political ambition, genius, and dangerous love.

The budget is just under $100 million, and Coppola recently told Deadline the film is on schedule and on budget.

Applications for SAG-AFTRA interim agreements were made available on the first day of the actors strike July 14, and the guild immediately received “hundreds of applications … we will be responding to all of them,” SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland said at the time, noting that projects can’t have “any AMPTP fingerprints on them” if they hope to be granted an agreement.

The process has since been refined to include casting agreements, and later modified its application policy to exclude any projects shot in the U.S. that are covered by the WGA. That move was is solidarity with the concurrent writers strike which is now in its 122nd day.

The SAG-AFTRA strike hits 50 days on Friday.
