Freddy Carter feels 'sadness' over Shadow and Bone cancellation but says fan support has been 'incredible' since
The actor speaks to Yahoo UK about Netflix's decision to end the show and its Six of Crows spin-off
Freddy Carter has shared his thoughts on the recent cancellation of Shadow and Bone and its planned Six of Crows spin-off, admitting to Yahoo UK that he feels "sadness" over Netflix's recent decision to end both.
The actor played Kaz Brekker in the series, the leader of the Dregs and one of the main characters featured in Leigh Bardugo's Grishaverse duology Six of Crows. Kaz and his fellow Crows were brought into Shadow and Bone early thanks to their popularity amongst fans, with the show's writers incorporating elements of their respective narratives into the story whilst leaving the main plot available for the spin-off.
Sadly, fans will not yet be able to see this come to fruition now that Netflix pulled the plug on both shows, but Carter is keen to remain positive despite the disappointing news.
Speaking on the matter whilst promoting his new Paramount+ series The Doll Factory with his fellow cast members, Carter reflects: "Firstly, I'm just incredibly proud to have been a part of something that I loved making, and watching, and being a part of that fandom myself.
"Very proud to have been a part of it, I'm very proud of the way we told the stories that we did get to tell and feel privileged to have had an insight into what the stories could have been.
"And that is obviously tinged with sadness, but mostly at the moment I'm just very proud to have been a part of something that people enjoyed as much as they did."Freddy Carter
Since Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows were cancelled fans have been in uproar over the decision, calling for the streamer to reverse their decision or for another platform to save both shows from cancellation. Fans have also launched a petition on Change.org, which has more than 173,000 signatures at the time of writing.
Carter says that he has "seen the fan reaction" and what viewers are doing to help save the show "is incredible", adding: "I've sort of had to take a little step back because it's almost too hard to see how many people are sad.
"To see it in number form, it's like a statistic for how many people would like to have it back and it's kind of like an amorphous thing.
"Obviously, it's my favourite character I have ever played, and one of the favourite casts I've ever been a part of, so I would always love to do more. But at the moment I'm just very proud to have been a part of it."Freddy Carter
After Carter shared this, his The Doll Factory co-stars shared their hopes for Shadow and Bone to also be renewed, remarking how the fan support was a sign it could be possible — with George Webster saying he and his co-stars would love to also join the cast if it's brought back.
The Paramount+ series sees Carter play surgeon Gideon, set in the Victorian era the show follows budding painter Iris (Esme Creed-Miles) who escapes her oppressive home in order to make her dreams of being an artist come true. But, it also brings her to the attention of two very different men, lothario painter Louis (Webster) and taxidermist/curio-collector Silas (Éanna Hardwicke), whose interest in her may prove deadly.
Shadow and Bone seasons one and two are available on Netflix, and The Doll Factory is also available to stream on Paramount+.
