‘The Freshly Cut Grass,’ Executive Produced by Martin Scorsese, Debuts Trailer Ahead of its World Premiere at Tribeca Fest (EXCLUSIVE)

Celina Murga’s “The Freshly Cut Grass,” executive produced by Martin Scorsese, is debuting at the Tribeca Festival and Variety has been given exclusive access to its first trailer and poster ahead of its world premiere on June 8.

Penned by Murga, director Juan Villegas (“Las Vegas”) and Lucía Osorio with the collaboration of Gabriela Larralde (“Monzon, A Knockout Blow”), the plot centers around two couples who engage in extramarital affairs and how, despite having the same professional position, they are treated differently because of their gender.

An exploration of the sexism and misogyny that permeates relationships both at home and in the workplace, pic offers a timely look at feminism, sexism, and the subtle ways these issues affect both men and women, all through the microcosm of two marriages.

“I like it when films make us question ourselves instead of giving us simple answers. ‘The Freshly Cut Grass’ seeks to reflect about the complex nature of love ties in long term relationships and what a family is today from each gender’s point of view. But it also wants to shine a light into how each gender´s actions are somehow conditioned by social mandates,” Murga told Variety.

“It’s is a movie about relationships but it is actually structured as a thriller. Like in a Fritz Lang film, characters cannot fight destiny; they have to face their unavoidability. Celina Murga is clearly one of the top female filmmakers from Latin America and this movie finds her at the top of her wonderful game, delving into the intricacies of marriage,” said producer Axel Kuschevatzky of Infinity Hill (“Argentina, 1985”).

Oscar nominee for best supporting actress Marina de Tavira (“Roma”) and Joaquin Furriel (“The Boss, Anatomy of a Crime”) lead a notable cast that includes Alfonso Tort, Romina Peluffo, Emanuel Parga and Verónica Gerez.

This is not the first time Scorsese has boarded a Murga film. He came upon her previous work while she participated in Rolex’s arts mentorship program. He also executive produced her drama “The Third Side of the River” (2014), distributed by The Match Factory and selected for competition at Berlinale.

The transatlantic production from Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Europe and the U.S. is produced by Infinity Hill alongside Buenos Aires-based Mostra Cine and Murga and Villegas’ Tresmilmundos Cine. Mexico’s Dopamine, Weydemann Bros. of Germany, Lorena Villareal’s Barraca Prods. and Uruguay’s Nadador Cine also boarded the pic.

Paulette Bensussen from TDO Media handles international sales.

Kuschevatzky will attend Rio2C where he figures as one of its speakers, alongside Ron Leshem, Armado Bo, Caleeb Pinkett, Editi Effiong, Gaston Duprat and Mariano Cohn and Carlos Saldanha.
