Gavin Robinson's victory over Naomi Long in East Belfast was the headline moment in Belfast's four constituencies at the 2024 General Election.

The DUP leader was expected to be in a tough fight to retain his seat as he defended a slim majority but in the end he held on, winning the seat with 19,894 votes, with Mrs Long on 17,218.

This election was the first fought on the new boundaries which saw changes to the geographical areas including South Belfast having been renamed Belfast South and Mid Down. The changes came about after The Parliamentary Constituencies Act 2020 required that most seats have between 69,724 and 77,062 voters.

After claiming victory, DUP leader Mr Robinson said it was “a good result” for the party. He said his performance was one that reflects “not only the political campaign our team has run in east Belfast but also in recognition of the people who in this election have come out to vote or come out to vote for the first time in a long time”.

On her ill-fated bid for the East Belfast seat, the Alliance Party leader and Stormont Justice minister, Naomi Long, said: “I suppose I was in an odd situation. It’s a win-win for me. If I won the election, that was great news but if I didn’t, I get to do a job I love.”

Elsewhere, Sinn Fein’s John Finucane has been re-elected as an MP for Belfast North, while his party colleague Paul Maskey held Belfast West. The SDLP's Claire Hanna retained her seat in South Belfast and Mid Down.
